Mallorca never ends

Pequeñas Cargas passes through some of the places that have appeared along my path during all these years on the island. But it never set out to be a map of Mallorca, much less to contain everything I have lived here.

Mallorca has a curious quality: no matter how much you travel across it, it never seems to finish revealing itself. Beyond a bend there may be a path you did not know, terraces held by stone walls, a cave, a hidden cove, an estate, a forest or some corner that seems to have been there waiting for you to pass.

And over time I discovered something else: the places you already know do not end either. Sometimes you return after years, and all it takes is a stone wall, bougainvillea spilling over a terrace, the shade of some trees or sitting down for a coffee for something that seemed asleep to become present again. Places hold memories too.

Over the years I accumulated many of them. Mountains, paths, villages, beaches, houses, people, conversations and small moments. Some eventually became part of this book. Many others did not.

And that is as it should be.

Fields and hills of Alaró in the day’s last light

They were not left out because they were missing. A book needs to choose. It needs to follow a path and, at some point, close its pages.

Sometimes nothing extraordinary needs to happen. Some places remain simply because of their beauty: because of the way a wall is built, because of trees growing on a terrace, because of a particular light or because of that difficult-to-explain feeling that makes you stop for a moment and look.

Perhaps that is why this website can continue a little beyond the book. Some of those places, photographs and memories can appear here, still part of the same journey, even though they never needed to become a chapter.

After all these years, I still have the feeling that Mallorca holds more places —and more memories— than one person can ever discover.

A book ends at some point. Mallorca does not.

A guy sat down in the wingback chair in his living room after a completely mad day, scanned a key, put on the music, kept reading and suddenly understood what he had built.

How to read Pequeñas Cargas

Pequeñas Cargas does not have a soundtrack that simply accompanies the reading.

At certain moments in the book, a key appears. You can scan it, let the music begin and keep reading.

Then something strange happens.

The music changes the rhythm of the reading. While your eyes move across the words, another story is unfolding at the same time: tempo, space, tension, breath, silence.

It resembles cinema, but there is one beautiful difference:

in cinema, someone else decides when you look, when you listen and how long each scene lasts.

Here, you decide.

You can spend twenty seconds on a sentence while the music continues. You can lift your head. Go back. Keep reading. Let the track end.

And sometimes, by pure chance, part of the music will coincide with a particular sentence. That combination will happen only once, because it will depend on your own reading rhythm.

Nor does the music try to describe what you are reading in literal terms. It does not intend to tell you what to feel.

The text preserves the story.

The photograph preserves the image.

The music carries the mood.

All three belong to the same world, but none replaces another.

That is why Pequeñas Cargas can simply be read as a book. But behind some of its pages, there are doors.

And the keys are there if you want to open them.

If you made it this far, find someone and give them a hug.

About the author

The gaze behind the path.

Claudio beneath a stone arch in the mountains

Claudio was born in Buenos Aires and lived for years in Munich and Berlin before settling in Mallorca. Music, photography and writing have been different ways of doing the same thing: observing what happens around him and following whatever sparks his curiosity.

He runs in the mountains, practises kung fu and yoga, makes music, takes photographs and, every now and then, puts on his headphones and skates through El Molinar. He also writes about what happens to him while doing all of the above. Many of those things eventually came together in Pequeñas Cargas.

Curiosity has taken him far. He is still running.
